Alcohol, animal sacrifice in government-sponsored Durga Puja

Agartala, Oct 15 (IANS): Alcoholic drinks and animals including goat, pigeons and buffaloes are offered as items of sacrifice in a 300-year-old Durga Puja sponsored by the Tripura government.
To maintain the royal family's traditional sanctity, the government has for the past seven decades been bearing the entire expenditure of Durga Puja at the Durgabari temple.

Govt to use its own land to develop Games Village

SHILLONG, Oct 15: The Meghalaya government has decided to use its own land for the development of the Games Village and stadiums for the upcoming National Games which the state will host in the year 2022.
This decision was arrived at during a meeting of the High Powered Committee (HPC) under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma which met here on Monday.
“We have identified the land. However, it will not be appropriate for me to tell (the location) but it is around Shillong and it is something where we don’t have to spend single paise,” Conrad informed after the meeting.

Court defers judgement in Salahuddin Ahmed case

SHILLONG, Oct 15: The court of the Judicial magistrate (first class) of Meghalaya deferred its judgment on Bangladesh Nationalist Party or BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed to November 9.
With this, the hearing on his case has been deferred for the third time in a row. The first incident was on August 13 and then October 15. A visibly sad Ahmed, while coming out of the court informed that the hearing has again been deferred to November 9th.

Hek moves for retention of Customs office

SHILLONG, Oct 15: Meghalaya’s Health Minister, AL Hek has apprised the Centre of the request of the State government to retain the office of Chief Commissioner of Customs and CGST in Shillong.
In this regard, Hek had called on Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley at New Delhi during which he also handed over Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma letter of request in this regard.
Hek said that the Union Minister has assured to examine the matter.

HC pulls up govt on condition of road to NEIGRIHMS

SHILONG, Oct 15: The dilapidated condition of the road leading to one of the premier medical institutes in the North East region, the North Eastern India Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has prompted the Meghalaya High Court to pull up the state government.
The matter came up during the hearing conducted by the division bench headed by chief justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice SR Sen, which has taken sou motu cognizance on the condition of the National Highway 40-Shillong to Dawki, here on Monday.

31 Bangladeshis detained in Guwahati station

Guwahati, Oct 15 (IANS): Thirty-one Bangladeshi nationals were detained at the railway station here on Monday, a police official said.
"The group came to Guwahati from Bengaluru onboard the Guwahati-Bangalore Express. They were waiting to board the Kanchanjungha express to go to Agartala," Superintendent of Railway Police Hemanta Kumar Das told the media here.
