Shillong, Nov 08: Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) President, Agnes Kharshiing, was on Friday arrested by Police for allegedly obstructing an eviction drive conducted by the a government department at Umsawli village.
She was arrested based on a FIR lodged by Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) authorities alleging that Kharshiing obstructed an eviction drive conducted at Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township (NST).
East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang said, “We have arrested the activist based on an FIR lodged by MUDA authorities”.
According to the FIR, Kharshiing had gone to Umsawli area in the NST to oppose the eviction drive against alleged illegal settlers which was carried out at around 10 am in the presence of Additional District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills, D M Wahlang.
But she was detained midway between Shillong and NST and brought to the Sadar Police Station. She was arrested after MUDA executive engineer Paul Micky Kharwaniang formally lodged an FIR in the afternoon at Rynjah PS against her.
The CSWO, which Kharshiing heads, is one of the 14 pro-Inner Liner Permit (ILP) groups demanding immediate implementation of the ILP to curb influx into the state.
