New Delhi, Feb 06 (PTI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Saturday favoured opening up of the retail trade stating the market requires greater competition for a check on prices. “We need greater competition and therefore need to take a firm view on opening up the retail trade,” Singh told Chief Ministers at a meeting convened to deal with the spiralling food prices. He said there was a huge difference between the wholesale and retail prices. “My colleague Sharadji (Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar) has on many occasions drawn attention to the wide differences between the retail and farm gate prices and there is evidence that retail prices have shot up more than the wholesale prices.”

Kuala Lumpur, Jan. 13 (PTI): Malaysia hopes to give a political push to their negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement with India and to collaborate in areas of IT, biotech and pharmaceuticals during Premier Mohd Najib Tun Razak’s upcoming visit to New Delhi beginning January 19. Razak, accompanied by a 200 strong delegation, will make an official visit to India beginning January 19 to broaden and deepen the existing close bilateral cooperation, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. Malaysia is expected to sign at least 13 Memoranda of Understanding with India in various fields including Highway and infrastructure projects. The visit would also provide an excellent opportunity for Najib and his host Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to exchange views and achieve closer understanding on issues of mutual interest, the statement said. The Premier has said that he wanted to see the Malaysia India FTA to go forward. Admitting that it had been on the backburner for a while, the premier felt that it was the right time to reignite talks and finalise the treaty by the year end. He said that the Indian economy was growing fast and that it would play an important role in international affairs. Najib’s delegation includes several ministers, deputy ministers, chief ministers, members of parliament and senior officials as well as representatives of the business sector and the media. “Both sides are expecting that this will be a substantive visit,” Premier Najib said on Monday.

Staff Reporter TURA, Jan. 08: With the annual general conference of the A·chik Baptist Dalgipa Krima (ABDK) scheduled to be held at Rongjeng in East Garo Hills in the month of February, the Garo Students Union (GSU) CEC has urged the state government to deliver its promise of repairing the roads in Garo Hills. Sanjeev A Sangma, GSU general secretary, informed MEGHALAYA TIMES that the union had on Thursday intimated the PWD Minister MM Danggo through the DC, West Garo Hills, Sanjay Goyal, regarding the union’s demands. He said, “In view of the upcoming annual general conference of the ABDK, we had urged the PWD Department to speed up the road repairing process in that area of East Garo Hills in particular and the entire Garo Hills in general. We have also further urged the government to confirm the action taken report regarding our demands through the West Garo Hills DC, Sanjay Goyal,” further adding that the union had on Thursday, issued a fresh 10-day deadline to the government to deliver the action taken report failing which it would begin staging an agitation. A 30-member GSU delegation had on November 23 last, held a three-hour threadbare discussion with Danggo, his department heads and various other ministers at the Circuit House here which ended in an impasse with the GSU issuing a 10-day deadline asking the department to submit its action report regarding the execution of works undertaken to repair National Highway 62 and other roads in Garo Hills. Danggo had informed the media that the state government was taking steps to improve the conditions of national highways in Garo Hills and that several proposals had already been sanctioned while others were under submission awaiting approval of the Government of India.

Ranchi, Jan 09 (IANS): Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister Raghubar Das said the government was concerned about the delay in the Arcelor-Mittal steel project and would help in setting up its plant in the state. “We are concerned about the steel projects, including that of Arcelor Mittal. Government will find out ways to help Mittal steel to set up their plant in the state (in Khuti and Gumla districts),” Das informed. “The present government is concerned about industria- lisation and at the same we are also concerned about the villagers whose land would be acquired for mega projects.” “Jharkhand was under President’s rule for nearly one year. There were successive unstable governments. After cabinet expansion we will work out ways of setting up steel projects.” L.N. Mittal, Chief of Arcelor Mittal, had expressed concern over the delay in the projects. The company signed an MoU with Karnataka government to set up another steel plant which is construed as move to shift the project from Jharkhand. The steel major had signed an MoU with the Jharkhand government in 2005 to set up a 12 million tonne greenfield steel plant with an investment of Rs.40,000 crore (Rs.400 billion/$8 billion). Mittal steel authorities say that the Jharkhand project’s estimated cost is swelling due to delay. Arcelor Mittal has already been allocated coal blocks and iron ore mines. Now it needs land to set up the plant. It plans to set up the plant on an 11,000-acre plot in the bordering areas of Khuti and Gumla districts. The villagers are protesting the land acquisition. Due to land acquisition problem, Mittal and other major steel players are finding it difficult to set up plants.
