New York, Sept. 08 (DPA):
Rafael Nadal was untouchable at the US Open, unbroken for the fortnight after reaching the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of friend Feliciano Lopez on a day of Spanish domination Tuesday.
The world number one and top seed worked past midnight and into Wednesday for his victory, which set him up for a match against compatriot Fernando Verdasco.
The eighth seed beat David Ferrer 5-7, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) on a day five Spaniards battled for advancement.
Nadal and Verdasco are to play the first Spaniard-vs-Spaniard quarter-final at the Open. "Fernando is a complete player, one of the best," Nadal said after coming through with only two unforced errors in the third set.
"He has all these shots and had an amazing comeback today."
Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka dealt a blow to American tennis as he left the host nation without a men’s quarter-finalist for the second year in a row after a 7-6 (11-9), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 defeat of Sam Querrey.

New Delhi, Sept. 08 (IANS):
India went to the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games as underdogs and they won their first gold when their men’s table tennis team beat fancied Singapore 3-2 in the final. This time around in New Delhi they are favourites at home and world no. 41 Sharath Kamal has an enormous task to see not only the team retain the gold but also the singles title in the Oct 3-14 Games.
Besides the gold in men’s singles and team events, the women’s team also notched up a bronze in Melbourne.
The expectations are high, but it is not going to be easy for India. England, Nigeria and Singapore have the potential to stop Kamal and his team from getting to the top.

Umlyngka SC, Nongumlong SC draw at 1-1
Sports Reporter
SHILLONG, Sept. 07:
The Second Division Super League match between Umlyngka SC and Nongumlong SC played at Polo ended in a draw with both teams scoring a goal each.
Earlier, Shairalang Nongneng gave Nongumlong an early breakthrough when he scored in only the fourth minute of the match to give his team an edge. As play reached half time, Shairailang’s goal was the only one to be scored with not too many chances coming for either side.
However, in the 52nd minute, Umlyngka’s Cormelius Tron gave his team the much needed equalizer. In the last minute of the match though, Nongumlong were offered a penalty but they were unlucky as the opportunity to walk away with the match was lost and eventually, both teams ended the match at 1-1.
Rynjah SC and Lawsohtun SC will face each other in Wednesday’s Third Division Super League match to be played at Ground II, Polo at 3.30 pm.
