on April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), General of the confederate Army during the American Civil War (1861-65), surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), General of the Union Army, who later on became the 18th President of the United States, at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The main cause of the Civil War was slavery. About half of the states in the United States of America (U.S.A) did not favour slavery. On this issue, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the 16th

President of the US. In his historical "house Divided Speech" boldly declared with conviction: "I believe the government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free".

Within two years of talking office, Lincoln final emancipation proclamation on September 22, 1862. The country was in the middle of the civil war which started on April 12, 1861. During his second inauguration ceremony on March 4, 1865, Lincoln proclaimed the famous words, "With malice toward none; with charity for all….." though Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, yet the US remained united proving its name. The end might be tragic but Lincoln’s sacrifice did not go in vain. The US is now a leading giant in the international scene.

Every year the country celebrates September 5. As Teacher’s Day. The day marks the birthday of Dr. Sarrapali Radhakrishnan, the President of India, who was a great philosopher and as eminent educationist. This year, the day coincided with Sunday. So the Government sponsored celebrations for teacher’s Day the following day.

What was supposed to be the day of pomp and grandeur, instead turn to confrontation and grief, which was the first of its kind in the state. To register their protest against their protest against the presence of Education Minister, Ampareen Lyndoh, the deficit school teachers staged a walk-out of U Soso Tham Auditorium. Their grievance, according to the E. D. Nongsiang, President of Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teacher’s Association (KJDSTA), is that the actual education policy has not been implemented in spirit but only in words".

On the contrary, Lyndoh criticized the action of the Teacher’s and termed their demands as "selfish". According the press reports, she announced that the Education Department also wanted to include adhoc school teachers as well as teachers of other categories into the Meghalaya Fourth Pay Commission.

While admitting that it was unfair and unacceptable to put the whole blame on the Education Department, she question the role of school managing committees and said that they must equally contribute to funds for Teacher’s. Furthermore, the Minister added that it is mandatory for every school managing committee to keep pre-requisite salaries in the bank in case the government cannot pay the amount for a particular month.

Some say that money is the root of all evil. Others say quite
the opposite, that lack of money is the root of all evil. The compromising position lies between the two, namely, enough to carry on with our daily lives. But the hitch in the theory is how much is "enough"? Human’s greed for wealth at time is so great that they tend to be totally blind to everything and have no concern or compassion at all for others. To these categories of people, "the end justifies the means". They forgot what the wise old used to say, "As you sow, so shall you reap".

Ill-gotten wealth does not bring peace to the usurper or to his family. These kinds of people are besetted with the multifarious problems in life. Generally, they are mentally disturbed in spite of the outward show or appearance. In the long run, it leads to disaster and ruins. However, will seldom learn from the lesson of the past. Lure of money and wealth is so great that those who indulge in corruptional practices seem to have no more conscience.

Young boys and girls are so busy going to schools and colleges to seek knowledge and then coming back home to rest for a while. In the evening they spend the time in helping their parents with the daily chore or completing their home assignment followed by watching of programmes on television or busying with their computers. This kind of a routine goes on for years together until they graduate from college or university. Consequently, the urbanized way of life does not afford this kids and teenagers a proper glimpse of the nature and its beauty.
It is a being observed that people who life in the towns and cities have little knowledge about the other things beyond their surroundings. They may have been told on the ecology and environment, the flora and fauna of their country, the clean air in the open space of the wild, the birds and the animals that live around the human habitation, etc. These may sound as fairy tales to some of them. But quite a good number of the urbanites and even some of the rural people are ignorant of life beyond their own homes.

Catching fish either simply by hands or by any means, whatsoever, has been an occupation of the people since ancient times or a sport to relax and enjoy. If we look or scan any local newspaper, we are not fail to catch the glimpse of advertisement which are becoming quite a regular feature in inviting people for a fishing competition, in an around Shillong or at a convenient location not far from the city. What attract more are the cash prizes amounting to lakhs of rupees to the winners. Of course, the organizers and owners of ponds usually reap profit, which is substantive enough since admission fees are more than a thousand rupees per fishing rod.
In the olden days, men used spears and nets or crude bone hooks. Gradually, the fishing tool is developed to facilitate in catching fish. For the beginner, the simplest tool is a pole and line, a hook, and some bait. The pole might be a cane or bamboo or any locally available material, provided that it was not easily breakable and light in weight, however, cane and bamboo poles are longer and stronger besides being cheaper and easily available. The line can be any type of thin string or a tough nylon. The line is tied strongly to the pole end. Bait used are worm, flies, sweets or any suitable type which are favourite of the fish, depending on the season, small fish are also used as bait if big fish are the targets. Once the fish bite the bait, there will be some slight movement of the pole and line. Accordingly the fisherman will utilized his skill to pull the fish and then catch it to store safely in a suitable container. The struggle between the fish and the fisherman may be sometime or even a longer time, depending on the type and size of the fish.
