India now has over 650 million mobile phone connections PDF Print E-mail

New Delhi, Sept. 08 (IANS):

India’s mobile phone market continued to expand at a robust pace with total connections estimated at 652.42 million as on Aug 1, thanks to 16.92 million new subscribers joining the network in July, official data showed Wednesday.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), the wireless phone user base grew 2.66 percent to 652.42 million in July, from 635.51 million in the previous month. 

With this the total telephone subscriber base in the country, both wireless and wire line connections combined, touched 688.38 million. The total telephone density reached 58.17 percent.

New Delhi, Sept. 08 (IANS):

Doordarshan, the public television broadcaster of India, will become the third highest ad-revenue earner among other national channels in the country by broadcasting the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games, says a new book.

According to the book "Road to Commonwealth Games", authored by Sunil Yash Kalra and published by Penguin, Doordarshan or DD aims to earn more than Rs.300 crore from ad sales in the 12 days of the Games telecast.

Murugappa aims $7.7bn growth by 2014 PDF Print E-mail

Chennai, Sept. 08 (IANS):

The $3.03 billion turnover industrial conglomerate Murugappa group is mulling organic and inorganic growth to take the group size to $7.7 billion by 2013-14, said a top group official.

"We will expand into businesses that are adjunct to our current activities. We are looking at drip irrigation, farm equipments," executive chairman A. Vellayan told reporters after unveiling the group’s new brand logo.

Indian court dismisses Vodafone petition on $2.6 bn tax case PDF Print E-mail

Mumbai, Sept. 08 (IANS):

In a setback for global mobile telecom giant Vodafone, the Bombay High Court Wednesday set aside the company’s petition challenging the tax liability of $2.6 billion towards capital gains claimed by the administration.

Vodafone was furnished with the $2.6 billion tax bill for its $11-billion acquisition of Hutchison Whampoa’s 67-percent stake in the telecom venture in India. 

The far-reaching order also sets a precedent on taxation matters for global firms buying Indian companies. Similar demands have been made from companies like breweries giant SABMiller, GE, and AT&T for their acquisitions in India over the past few years.

Can’t follow tips on food grain storage, Supreme Court told PDF Print E-mail

New Delhi, Sept. 06 (IANS):

The central government Monday told the Supreme Court that it could not follow its suggestion to procure food grains in proportion to storage capacity as it had to cater to the farmers by providing them minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.

The government said that the "procurement policy of the government of India has twin objectives of ensuring minimum support price to the farmers and meeting the requirements of the food grains for the public distribution system (PDS) and other welfare schemes".
